Consumer Awareness Guide

Low E glass is the method used to block the sun's heat and harmful ultraviolet rays that would normally come into your home. Manufacturers put a layer of metallic "silver" in the glass. The silver acts like a mirror and blocks the sun's heat and ultraviolet rays. This silver is called Low E glass and it has been

Now, there is a new technique that allows manufacturers to put a double layer of silver in the glass. Obviously, a double layer does a better job of blocking the heat and ultraviolet rays of the sun. This double layer of Low E glass is called "Soft Coat" Low E glass or Low E2. double spatter soft coat. The newest technology is SunCoatMAXTMLow-E4.

Here is the big difference. With a single coat of Low-E (Hard Coat), you will still feel heat coming into your home. With a double coat of Low-E (Soft Coat), you will not feel any heat coming into your home. And the single coat of Low-E is a lot cheaper than the double coat.

Here is the rip-off. Most homeowners have heard the term Low-E glass. But, they do not know that there is cheap Low-E (Hard Coat) and there is good Low-E (Soft Coat). The dishonest window dealer does not explain the difference. As long as the client hears the term Low-E glass, they think they are getting what they need. The dealer advertises Low-E glass, but gives the client the cheap stuff, cutting corners and ripping off the client with glass that does not insulate the way the client thinks it will.

Educated clients - insist on SunCoatMAXTM/ Low-E4 or Soft Coat Low E2 and get it in writing.

The most expensive type of glass other window dealers try to sell is Triple Pane, also called Heat Mirror. Heat Mirror is two panes of glass with a Visqueen sheet (a type of polyethylene sheet, a very thin layer of plastic) stretched between the two. These "triple pane" windows will save you upwards of 40% on your heating and cooling bills, but they cost over $600 each. At that rate, it will be a long time to make up for the initial out of pocket cost. Finely Finished does not recommend this triple pane glass as it is over-kill for Southern California's climate, not to mention a waste of your hard-earned money.

We also do not recommend a single layer of Low E nor Argon gas. The fact of the matter is this glass package is obsolete. Other window dealers won't tell you that Argon gas dissipates up to 10% each year. At that rate, within five years the insulation factor will be insufficient. The bad news is that most window dealers still sell this type of glass. They use it because it is cheap and because most clients don't know that there is something much better out there.

At Finely Finished, we recommend Milgard's double pane, Low-E4 windows with SunCoatMAXTM technology. These windows are made for our weather and definitely a lot less expensive. You may be asking yourself, what is SunCoatMAXTM technology and why is it better for my home? SunCoatMAXTM windows, Milgard's patented technology, are arguably the most energy efficient windows available. Milgard states "SunCoatMAXTM windows offer unmatched protection from solar heat gain, making them an easy way to reach Title 24 energy efficiency requirements in California – the toughest in the country." SunCoatMAXTM windows block 95% Ultraviolet Rays from coming into your home. These windows also block 20'F Solar Heat Gain in the summer and block up to 15°F heat loss in the winter. All of this equals savings of up to 33% on your utility bills (gas and electric). This incredible 95% ultraviolet blockage reduces fading to your furniture, window treatments and carpet.

Finely Finished stands by Milgard's SunCoatMAXTM Low-E4 insulating glass not only because it reduces energy costs, but also because it increases your home's comfort.

What is so surprising to many home buyers is that SunCoatMAXTM Low-E4 windows give them all these benefits while never sacrificing natural light coming into their home.

Whether building a new home or remodeling your existing one, SunCoatMAXTM may eliminate the need for any number of the following building specifications.

  • Radiant barriers
  • Extra insulation
  • Tankless water heater
  • 90% efficient furnace
  • Tight ducts (This energy-saving measure may require an additional inspection and, therefore, cost even more, making SunCoatMAXTM even better choice by comparison.)
  • R-38 ceiling.

  • Everywhere you look, SunCoatMAXTM can help you save money. Compared to other frequently used energy efficiency measures, windows with Milgard's technology deliver superior gains in efficiency relative to their cost.
